Capital Budget: $65 million
Architect: To Be Selected

White Oak’s Role: Strategic Master Plan including Outline Architectural Program and Economic Model
White Oak was selected through a national competition to develop a Strategic Master Plan for a new national military museum which the Coast Guard is considering in New London, CT, near the US Coast Guard Academy. One of our tasks was to quantify staff, operating and capital costs to inform USCG’s decision.
The National Coast Guard Museum’s mission is to build awareness of the United States Coast Guard and engagement with its programs by exploring the Coast Guard’s rich history, current life and future potentials through public exhibits, theaters, programs, and other museum-quality learning experiences. The project will be developed by the NCGM Association, a private non-profit, and then donated to the US Coast Guard.
Client: Peoria Riverfront Museum
Capital Budget: $65 million
Architect: Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects
Open: 2011
White Oak’s Role: Community Needs Assessment, Visitor Research, Strategic Master Plan, Room Book and Exhibit Master Plan
Lakeview’s CEO, Jim Richerson, is leading the effort to build an interdisciplinary museum involving theme galleries, theaters, discovery centers and other programmatic zones that will be full of open-ended and changing experiences.
Peoria Riverfront Museum will be built through a $40 million bond referendum that voters passed in April 2009. Caterpillar Inc. has committed $11 million of the $73 million campaign to build the Peoria Riverfront Museum (PRM) in downtown Peoria. PRM’s new 80,800 SF facility will be built on a three-acre portion of the new downtown Museum Square where it will be joined by Caterpillar’s Worldwide Visitor Center.
Client: Science Center of Iowa
Capital Budget: $62 million
Architect: Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects
White Oak’s Role: Executive Producer, Strategic Master Plan and Room Book
The Science Center of Iowa is a new 120,190 square-foot facility in downtown Des Moines. Devoted to skill development and lifelong learning, the Center offers dynamic exhibit experiences, an IMAX® Dome Theater, the Iowa Learning Center, a Science Adventure Theater for live performances and SCI’s renowned preschool for early childhood learning.
Opened in 2005, SCI is designed as a “flexible museum,” their name for a Delta approach to change. The design of the experience platforms is focused on changeable scenarios. By separating the scenario layer from its long-term fixed platform, SCI is in a position to make future changes easily and economically.
White Oak was the Program Manager/Executive Producer for all exhibits and theaters in the new SCI. This assignment grew out of our work on SCI’s Community Needs Assessment, Strategic Master Plan and its Room Book, defining the architectural program.
